The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is a full service animal health diagnostic facility. The Lab is charged with the diagnosis of animal diseases, and the performance of tests which safeguard the health of the animal population in Kentucky. The Lab helps identify infectious diseases, identify regulatory diseases, provides the means to meet export sales requirements, and provides an early warning system for impending epidemics.

Piroplasmosis Testing Update: Effective immediately (February 27, 2012), the University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory can perform cELISA testing for export provided that the country receiving the animal accepts cELISA methodology for piroplasmosis testing. To be sure what methodology is needed for individual countries, contact the Area Veterinarian in Charge (AVIC). For the state of Kentucky, the phone number is: 502-848-2040. We encourage all EIA forms submitted for testing to include the 6 digit National Accreditation Number of the submitting veterinarian.

Please submit a separate red top tube for each of the following tests: EIA, EVA, and piroplasmosis testing.

The VDL runs EIA (Equine Infectious Anemia) tests by the ELISA method. AGID method is done only if specifically requested. This must be done by contacting either Dr. Deborah Williams or Meg Steinman at 859-257-8283 prior to sending in the specimen and paperwork for testing.
